Color Documents: A Presentational Theory, Hunter College, April 15 - June 7, 1985, New York, NY

This interesting exhibition, curated by artist Sanford Wurmfeld, consisted of some 60 documents dating from the 18th century onwards relating to the classification of color, mostly in the form of color charts. A nice catalog catalog accompanied the show, which may still be available.

Along the same lines, see http://www.colorsystem.com/ for a comprehensive site devoted to the history of the study of color.
